William James Charles Montgomery JATER
His father was James JATER b. 1800, Byfleet, Surrey and his mother was Charlotte MARTIN b.6 Jun 1802, Wilmington, Kent. There are no birth records for any William Montgomery Jater and it is thought that he was a stepchild.
Wife: Emily Jane STEWART (or STUART) b 29 June 1846 Manchester, England, d 21 Dec 1895 Papakura, NZ
He came to NZ in the East Surrey Regiment 70th Foot Regiment, arrived from Calcutta, India on the Daniel Rankin 1047 tons on 13 May 1861. He was awarded the Indian Mutiny Medal and had rank of Sgt. (He is named in that list as Sgt. William James M. Jater). He was discharged as a Private with gratuity 31 Dec 1865. In August 1867, with a John Wallis, he was gaoled for 9 months hard labour for theft (Article). He married Emily STUART 21 July 1869 at Mangawai, NZ, (certificate)when he changed his surname to ST GEORGE for reasons still being researched, probably to make a clean start to his life. John Wallis was a marriage witness. See also jater.txt. The couple moved to Grahamstown to join the gold rush. John Wallis died in Grahamstown in a fight in 1870.
