James JATER b 20 April 1800 in Byfleet, Surrey. Occupation cordwainer (shoemaker). Died Dec 1869 at Chertsey.

His father was James JATER and his mother was Sarah ?.

Wife: Charlotte MARTIN b 6 June 1802 at Wilmington, Kent, baptised 6 Sept 1802 at Wilmington. Died June 1881 at Chertsey.

Her father was William MARTIN, mother was Hannah CUZER (LDS Batch M012531) married 27 Mar 1780, Wilmington, Kent.

1. Charlotte JATER b 16 Sep 1827 Chertsey, Surrey (LDS batch C067981). Charlotte had a child named Walter (William) Henry Young JATER, bapt 18 Nov 1849 at Ashford Middlesex. The birth record of this child shows him born to Charlotte JATER, single woman, no father's name. William Montgomery joined the army 2 days after young William's baptism on 18 Nov 1849.
2. William Montgomery JATER b 1831 ? not in Surrey according to the 1841 census. (As no birth records exist for William, he may be a stepchild). He dropped the James from his name after leaving the army and took the surname ST GEORGE when he married Emily Jame STEWART in 1868 at Mangawai, New Zealand). He was awarded the Indian Mutiny Medal and had rank of Sgt. (He is named in that list as Sgt. Willam James M. Jater).
3. Susannah Sophia JATER bapt 1 Feb 1835 at Byfleet, Surrey. LDS Batch C067981. She married Francis HARRIS 30 June 1860 at Weybridge, Surrey.
4. Henry William Montgomery JATER b 10 Dec 1838 at Byfleet, bapt 24 March 1839 also at Byfleet. (I have birth cert. copy).
5. Alfred JATER b 1843 at Byfleet, bapt 28 May 1843 also at Byfleet (In LDS records as Alfred JATERS). Followed his brother, William, to New Zealand aged 28 in ship Light Brigade 28 Feb 1872 via Australia. Married Matilda CLARKE (widow with one child Edith Alice Matilda (CLARKE)) 4 Nov 1879 in Auckland.
   Lived in Papakura until about 1899 with the following children:
   • Edith Alice Matilda (CLARKE) JATER b 21 Mar 1872. Married William Henry Thomas OWENS, Ironfounder, Waikino.
   • Marion Gladys JATER b 1891 (daughter of Matilda Alice Clark aged 19, no father listed (Govt restriction on releasing all information) who married George Potaua HENRY, Grocer, Waihi in 1910. Son: Alfred Henry Jater HENRY, substation operator NZ Electricity, Maungataupere/Whangarei, died 20 Dec 1989. Son: Paul Edward Jater HENRY. (Contact me please Paul, I have more information for you on your Jater heritage.)
   Alfred Jater worked as Tramway Foreman at Waikino Gold Processing operation, both he and Matilda died in 1926 and are buried in plots D15 and D17 at Pukerimu Cemetary, Paeroa. His signature is on a Waihi Mining document on display in the Waihi Museum.
